Azizah: The Effectiveness of Daily English Speaking Practice Program in Improving Students’ Speaking Ability (A Case Study at Second Grade of Senior High School Plus Boarding School of Al-Ittihad Cianjur)
Speaking as communication tool is very significant in daily life, therefore Islamic boarding school of Al-Ittihad applies the Daily English Speaking Practice program. The program means various activities that will be done toward certain purpose. This program has the aim to improve students speaking ability, because by practicing English, it can help students to improve their English speaking ability. And give students more opportunities to practice English speaking in their daily activities.
The purpose of this research is to know how far the effectiveness of Daily English Speaking Practice Program in improving students’ speaking ability at second grade of Senior high school l-Ittihad. The students’ ability in speaking through daily speaking practice program will be helped the students’ English speaking ability especially in improving pronunciation, intonation, and fluency.
The method used in this research is quantitative data with correlation analysis. The techniques used to collect the data are: Observation, interview, test and questionnaire. Whereas, the sample used are the students at second grade of Senior high school Al-Ittihad. The researcher developed 15 items of Questionnaire in order to know the reality of the effectiveness of daily English speaking practice program at this school, and also developed 10 items of English speaking test to identify the reality of the students’ ability in speaking English.
After analyzing the data, the score of questionnaire is 67 (for the highest), and 45 (for the lowest) the average score is 57,3. While the score of students’ speaking test is 80 (for the highest), and 57 (for the lowest), the average score is 69,13. It was known that t count (3,91) > t table (2,73) on the 5 % significant level. So that the null hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and (Ho) is rejected. And the correlation between them is 0,55 based on the scale this score is categorized in sufficient correlation because it is in the scale of 0,41 – 0,70.
Furthermore, the percentage of variable X (the effectiveness of daily English speaking practice program) influenced variable Y (students’ speaking ability) was 17 %. It means that there was 83% other factors that influencing the students’ ability in speaking English.
